This section of my website is all about my underwater paintings, which I paint underwater whilst laying on the seabed.

In Summer 2008 I was diving off Skye & as I was swimming along I thought wouldn't it be great to be able to paint underwater. I was already a full time artist and had been diving since 98 and thought it would be great to be able to combine the two - so I decided to give it a go.

I soon realised it was going to be a challenge.....

Firstly, I had to make sure my paints wouldn't pollute the sea and kill the fish.
There were lots of other problems too - my paint wouldn't stick to the canvas so I had to try different primers, half the stuff I took in (canvases, paints etc) floated off, so I had to weight them down.
Then when I'm painting and engrossed you don't see big lionsmane jellyfish till after they've stung you!!
But worst are the crabs, as soon as you take your eyes off them they're off with your stuff.

Anyhow, lots of paint ruined canvases and a hundred odd dives later, I'm finally happy with the results and some are now here on my website.
s

All the pieces are oils on board, all are painted underwater & once they are out of the water I don't touch them up.

I'm planning lots next year so watch this space, hope you like them & thanks for looking.

And watch out for the thieving crabs!!!
